More Word Fun!

A BlogSnax© post

Is it just me or is it weird that the phrases “fill out” and “fill in” mean the same thing? You can fill out a form or fill in a form. Same result. What’s with that?

(Sorry for the terse post. I’m busy trying to get book #10 ready.)

  1. I always thought it was weird that “it’s all downhill from here” can mean either things will get easier or they’ll get worse.

    English!

    • I love it! Good find! There are plenty of others. I’ve written before about flammable and inflammable, overlook and oversee. And a one-way mirror is often referred to as a two-way mirror.

Yes, it’s crazy, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. How boring would it be if there were no room for ambiguity? 🙂

  2. You may already know this, but flammable and inflammable have an interesting history. According to lore, the original word used on clothing labels was inflammable, but some people misinterpreted that to mean fabric that could *not* burst into flame — so they changed labeling to flammable to hopefully be less ambiguous!

The “in” in this case doesn’t mean “not.”
