A coupla quickies

A BlogSnax© post

Grownups say the darndest things.* Here are a couple of sentence fragments I encountered not so very long ago.

During an interview recorded in a book I read recently, someone made the following statement:

…he was very sort of angry.

Very sort of? How does that work? This reinforces my claim that qualifiers such as “kind of” and “sort of” need to be outright banned. Last year I read a (different) book–a real, published, average length book–that used the phrase “sort of” 136 times. Not to be outdone, the same book used “kind of” a whopping 257 times! (Props to the Kindle that lets me make such inane calculations.)

This one was on a slide shown during a presentation I attended. The speaker, a person for whom I have great respect, made the fascinating tautological observation that…

… the population is aging over time.

So that’s where my life went. Sheesh!
